Box Score Greensboro, NC – A Leon Hargrove (Raleigh, NC / Middle Creek) jumper in the paint at the buzzer rolled out as Guilford hung on for a 74-72 win at home against Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday night.
The Tigers got out to a slow start, trailing 9-2 with 15:46 to go in the first half. Following an H-SC timeout, Kodie Critzer (Charlottesville, VA / St. Anne's-Belfield) was inserted and the substitution paid dividends as he drained a three from the right corner 10 seconds later. Guilford's Jake Hopkins pushed the lead back to six, 11-5, but Critzer drained another three from the right corner at 14:27 to put the Tigers down just 11-8. After Guilford went ahead 13-8, the Tigers scored the next six points to take their first lead of the game, 14-13, at the 12:10 mark.
The teams would tie the game and trade the lead several times over the next five minutes, but the Tigers would take control of the first half from there. With Guilford up 26-25, JaVonte Reddick (Richmond, VA / L.C. Bird) grabbed the lead for H-SC with a three-pointer as the Tigers would lead for the rest of the half. H-SC led by seven, 37-30, with 54 seconds left but Josh Spainhour drained a three pointer at the 28 second mark to make it a 37-33 game at the half.
H-SC maintained the advantage through the first eight minutes, leading by as many as six, 51-45, at the 14:11 mark following a Mitch Owens (Williamsburg, VA / Walsingham) three pointer. Guilford caught fire from three and the Tigers offense went cold, allowing the Quakers to go on a 15-2 run to go ahead 60-53 with 8:53 remaining. Guilford continued to lead by six, 64-58, at the 7:29 mark, but back-to-back three pointers by Greg Lewis (Mechanicsville, VA / Hanover) and Keegan Wetzel (Mebane, NC / Eastern Alamance) tied the game at 64-64 at 5:38.
A Matt McCarthy shot from beyond the arc gave the hosts the advantage back, but consecutive Wetzel jumpers put the Tigers ahead 70-69 with 3:29 to go. The Quakers took over the game from there on the back of offensive rebounds and second chance points, scoring the game's next five off second chances to go up 74-70 with 57 ticks left.
Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Christian) was fouled seven seconds later and made both FTs to cut the lead to 74-72. Jake Hopkins was forced into a difficult fade away, long 2-point jumper at the 17 second mark, and Williamson corralled the rebound. The Tigers called a timeout with 12 seconds left, and Hargrove's jumper at the buzzer rimmed out.
Williamson led the team with 12 points and posted a game-high 14 rebounds. Murray scored nine points and dished out an ODAC season-high 12 assists, resulting in 29 Tiger points. Sasha Obradovic (Belgrade, Serbia / Hawaii Prep) added nine points while Wetzel shot a perfect 4-4 for nine points.
Jake Hopkins scored 18 points with five offensive rebounds and four assists. Trevor Hyatt also scored 18, going 3-6 from three and 7-7 from the free throw line. Spainhour tacked on 14 points and shot 4-5 from deep range, and McCarthy added on 11 points with five rebounds. Zeb Richardson collected a team-high 11 rebounds with seven coming on the offensive glass.
Both teams made 10 three-pointers on the night and were nearly dead even in made field goals with H-SC making 28 compared to 26 for Guilford, but Guilford made 12 free throws while H-SC had only nine attempts, making six. The Quakers outrebounded the Tigers 40-30 and grabbed 21 offensive rebounds that resulted in 23 second chance points.
Hampden-Sydney travels to Lynchburg, VA on Saturday for a 2 pm game at Randolph College.
