Cameron McFarlane Saves the Day for Tiger Soccer

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Freshman goalkeeper Cameron McFarlane (Norwich, CT / South Kent) turned away 10 Greensboro College shots as Hampden-Sydney defeated the Pride 1-0 with just 11 seconds left in double overtime.

With the clock closely approaching zero in double overtime, Bryan Talbert (Seaford, VA / York) fed a pass in the left of the box to Robert Kerby (Hampton, VA / Kecoughtan), who snuck a low lying shot just to the right of Greensboro goalkeeper Manbi Nyepon.

McFarlane was the difference maker throughout the game as he stopped a few strong shots and helped break up numerous other Pride possessions. The Tigers defense, partially fueled by the return of Jackson Parker (Raleigh, NC / Sanderson), was stout on the afternoon as they rarely allowed Greensboro to put together any continuity on the offensive end and broke up most possessions before the Pride could get a strong look at a goal scoring opportunity.

Neither team was able to muster a shot on goal in the first overtime session. Greensboro opened the second extra period commanding the action and registered three corner kicks in the first six minutes. Following a Tigers corner kick at 107:25, the ball looked to be heading out of bounds and back to Greensboro, but James Lawrence (Midlothian, VA / Midlothian) miraculously put the ball back into play directly in front of the net. Liam Hogan (Haymarket, VA / Battlefield) got a header shot on goal that looked like it would be the game winner, but Nyepon was there to catch it. Greensboro's Earl Lloyd fired a shot a minute later, but McFarlane's 10th save led to the Tigers regaining possession. With 53 seconds to go, Kerby saw his shot saved, but he notched the game winner with 11 seconds left on the clock for the golden goal.

Greensboro held a 17-10 advantage in shots and a 10-6 edge in shots on goal. The Pride also earned 10 corner kicks compared to just three for Hampden-Sydney.

Hampden-Sydney travels to Marymount University on Saturday for a 1 pm non-conference contest.
