Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney Soccer team utilized relentless pressure all over the field to record a clean sheet in a 3-0 win over the visiting Knights of Southern Virginia.
The Tigers set the tone from the outset and dominated time of possession as their pressure defense rarely allowed the Knights to get past the midfield line. Hampden-Sydney saw a few strong scoring opportunities in the opening 45 but were not able to put one in the net.
The pressure paid off soon enough in the second half when a Bo Burns (Raleigh, NC / Leesville Road) cross to the far left post found Bryan Barahona (Guatemala City, Guatemala / Meadowbrook) as he headed the ball into the far right post to get the scoring going in the 61st minute. The goal seemed to further motivate the Tigers as the flood gates opened. Numerous scoring opportunities presented themselves before Bryan Talbert (Seaford, VA / York) finished off a Robert Stephens (Williamsburg, VA / Lafayette) pass in the 75th minute for the insurance goal. Liam Hogan (Haymarket, VA / Battlefield) then notched the game's third goal, with an assist to Talbert, in the 87th minute to wrap up the game.
Talbert led the way in the scoring column with a goal and an assist for three points as the only multi-goal contributor on the afternoon, and Cameron McFarlane (Norwich, CT / South Kent) earned his first career shutout.
The Tigers defense was impressive on the day, allowing just two shots with one of those coming off a free kick. Meanwhile, the offense did it's best to support he defense with 29 shots, with all 13 shots on goal coming after intermission. H-SC also held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Hampden-Sydney hosts Greensboro College on Sunday at 2 pm.
