Rugby Notches 24-12 Victory Over JMU

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Rugby team advances to 2-0 with a win over James Madison University's D2A team on September 21. Although the Tigers kept the ball inside JMU's half for the first 18 minutes, repeated penalties kept the team from scoring. An intercepted pass at the 18 minute mark allowed JMU to get on the scoreboard first. Hampden-Sydney, however, answered four minutes later with a try scored by sophomore Charlie Kyle and the kick converted by sophomore Greg Regan. At the 32 minute mark James Hanna, an exchange student from Ireland, notched his first score in an American rugby match.

Hampden-Sydney's defense continued to dominate the game in the second half, shutting down almost all of JMU's attempts to score. The Dukes did manage to put seven more points on the board due to a Hampden-Sydney penalty. However the Tiger's demonstrated exceptional passing and running skills while outplaying the Dukes in the rucks. Sophomore Mike Bouldin scored at the 49th minute and Hanna picked up a second try in the 60th minute. Tom Bourne converted the kick on Hanna's try adding two points to the Tiger's score.

Hampden-Sydney Rugby returns to action on September 28th vs. Roanoke College. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm in Salem.
