Wesley Upends #8 Hampden-Sydney 78-72

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Wesley College, receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, used 50% second half shooting to upset #8 Hampden-Sydney 78-72 on Tuesday evening.

In a back-and-forth affair, Hampden-Sydney took the early advantage, 12-5, less than five minutes in and expanded the lead to 16-9 at the 12:36 mark. The Wolverines then went on a 10-2 run to surge ahead 19-18 with 7:56 to go in the first half. Following an Eric Selby layup and free throw at 5:38, Hampden-Sydney drained three shots from deep range in a row surrounding a Wayne Lennon free throw to go ahead 34-26 with three minutes remaining in the first stanza. The Wolveries closed the half on a 11-4 spurt, capped by a AJ Tilghman layup seconds before the half ended to take momentum into halftime despite being down 38-37.

The second-half was tight throughout all 20 minutes. With the Tigers ahead 52-51 with 11:51 remaining, JaVonte Reddick (Richmond, VA / L.C. Bird) canned back-to-back three pointers around an Anthony Bowers layup to put H-SC up 58-53. With Hampden-Sydney ahead 63-59 after a Mitch Owens (Williamsburg, VA / Walsingham) tip-in, David Langan took over the game, scoring eight of the game's next 11 points, all scored by Wesley, to take a decisive 70-63 lead with 4:03 to go. Wesley maintained a six-point lead, 74-68, with 1:39 left on the clock, but Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Christian) scored the game's next four points, all at the free throw line, to trim the deficit to 74-72 with 56 ticks left. James Livingston drained a 16-foot pull up jumper from the right wing with 24 seconds remaining to clinch the game as the Wolverines closed out the win at the charity stripe.

Murray scored a team-high 15 points to go with four assists and two steals. Khobi Williamson (Norfolk, VA / Maury) posted 12 points and six rebounds while Greg Lewis (Mechanicsville, VA / Hanover) notched 11 points, three boards, and three assists. Owens contributed nine points and six caroms, Reddick scored nine points, and Stephen Vassor (Roanoke Rapids, NC / Brunswick (VA)) added on eight points.

Livingston scored a game-high 23 points. Langan (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Quincy Pettiford (13 points, 11 rebounds) each posted double-doubles. Tilghman came off the bench to contribute 10 points.

Each team was efficient from the floor as both shot over 45% overall and over 40% from three, with both making nine trifectas. The difference came at the free throw line where Wesley went 19-22 compared to 7-10 for the Tigers. Wesley controlled the glass, outrebounding H-SC 36-27, leading to a 16-8 advantage in second-chance points. 

Hampden-Sydney travels to Pittsburgh, PA this weekend to participate in the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Tournament. H-SC will play Springfield on Saturday at 1 pm.
