Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - James Lawrence (Midlothian, VA / Midlothian) scored with 40.8 seconds left in double overtime to give the Tigers a 2-1 win over Roanoke College on Senior Night and also clinched the Tigers a berth into the ODAC Tournament.
Lawrence netted the golden goal with a one-on-one with the goalkeeper after a Liam Hogan (Haymarket, VA / Battlefield) header pass found Robert Stephens (Williamsburg, VA / Lafayette) who then passed it to Lawrence.
The Tigers had a prime opportunity to end it near the end of the first overtime when Alex Thexton got the ball towards the left of the box but his shot went wide left of the goal. Neither team was able to put a shot on goal in the first overtime session, but Cameron McFarlane (Norwich, CT / South Kent) saved two Maroons shots in the second overtime to give the Tigers the chance to win the game.
The Tigers got on the board early in the contest when senior Jason Haas (Newport News, VA / Menchville) notched his first career goal off a Bryan Talbert (Seaford, VA / York) corner kick at 3:14. However, that would be about all the Hampden-Sydney offense would muster in regulation as H-SC registered only three shots in the first 90 minutes of action. Roanoke controlled time of possession for the majority of regulation and kept putting pressure on the Tigers defense. They eventually got the game-tying tally just before halftime in the 43rd minute as Jackson Goyette scored off a corner kick. McFarlane made several outstanding saves throughout regulation to eventually force the game into overtime.
McFarlane had one of the best games of his young career, finishing with a career-high 12 saves. H-SC was outshot 24-6 including a 13-3 margin on shots on goal. The Maroons also drew 11 corner kicks to four for the Tigers.
Hampden-Sydney closes out the regular season at home on Tuesday with a 4 pm contest against the Guilford College Quakers.
