Box Score BRIDGEWATER, VA - Hampden-Sydney Soccer trailed 1-0 at halftime but came back to defeat Bridgewater College 2-1 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
H-SC got off to a slow start in the first half, and the Eagles made them pay for it at 10:54 when Ben Lewis scored off a rebound to put the hosts ahead 1-0. Following a Jackson Parker (Raleigh, NC / Sanderson) yellow card in the 29th minute following a foul in the box, Bridgewater's Adrian Zamora was awarded a penalty kick. Cameron McFarlane (Norwich, CT / South Kent) made a dazzling diving save as Zamora shot it to the left post. The game-saving save seemed to light a fire underneath the Tigers as Bridgewater got just one more shot the rest of the half and the Tigers started bringing the pressure on offense. The Tigers threatened a couple times in the stanza but were not able to draw the equalizer.
Each team kept putting pressure on the defenses and it eventually paid off for Hampden-Sydney in the 66th minute. A Bryan Talbert (Seaford, VA / York) corner kick at 65:29 got headed into the air in an attempt to clear the ball, but it only traveled a few yards, allowing Leo Kowalski (Curitiba, Brazil / Deep Run) to volley it in from 10 yards out for the equalizer. The Eagles got a few chances to win it in regulation, but McFarlane made some more great saves and the Tigers narrowly avoided a last second goal in regulation but the scrum in front of the goal resulted in only a corner kick as the game went into overtime.
Hampden-Sydney wasted no time taking care of business in the extra frame as the first shot of the period found Robert Stephens (Williamsburg, VA / Lafayette) finding the back of the net for the golden goal off a Robert Kerby (Hampton, VA / Kecoughtan) assist.
H-SC outshot BC 17-15 but Bridgewater had an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. McFarlane stopped seven shots while Kevin Morris had three saves. The Tigers also outdrew the Eagles in corner kicks 6-1.
Hampden-Sydney goes on the road for their final time in the regular season on Wednesday as they travel to Virginia Wesleyan College for a 7 pm contest.
