Box Score HARRISONBURG, VA - Hampden-Sydney Soccer spoiled Eastern Mennonite's Homecoming game with a key 2-1 ODAC win on Saturday afternoon.
Each team got some good looks at the net in the first half, but the goalkeepers were there to turn away anything that came near while defenders blocked a few shots to make it a scoreless draw heading in to the second half.
Hampden-Sydney drew first blood in the 56th minute off an EMU turnover. Robert Stephens (Williamsburg, VA / Lafayette) got out on a breakaway and EMU goalkeeper Andrew Yoder deflected it, but it bounced in before a EMU defender was able to get to the ball. Later, the Tigers drew a foul for an Bryan Talbert (Seaford, VA/York) free kick, and his kick found Davis Carter (Charlotte, NC / Myers Park) in the box for a header goal at 80:47.
The Royals did not go down without a fight. Less than two minutes after the Carter gal, EMU drew a corner kick and got off three shots within a span of 10 seconds, one was blocked, one hit off the crossbar, and the other went wide to end the possession. In the 87th minute, EMU received another corner kick and Caleb Galloday's shot was saved by Blake Carrey (Richmond, VA / Deep Run). Following an H-SC foul at about the 88:10 mark, Joao Downs connected on a free kick goal into the left of the net at 88:15. The Royals were not able to manage another shot as H-SC held on for the win.
Eastern Mennonite had a 17-16 advantage in shots, but H-SC held a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Andrew Yoder made four saves while Carrey recorded three. EMU drew seven corner kicks to four for H-SC.
Hampden-Sydney hosts Randolph-Macon on Wednesday for a 7 pm contest.
