Williamsburg, VA–Hampden-Sydney Rugby succumbed 27-0 to
William and Mary on the road in both teams' second conference
game of the season. For 20 minutes both teams fought intensely to
string together a successful attack but solid defenses on both
sides prevented a score. Capitalizing on its wide pitch,
William and Mary managed to stretch out the Tiger defense and
scored a try. Although the conversion was unsuccessful, the Tigers
were unable to rally their attack. The Tribe struck back two more
times in the half with one converted and one un-converted try
– leaving the score at 17-0 going into half-time.
Living up to their reputation as a second half team, the Tigers
put forth an increased effort during the second half. Tyler
Wilson ('12) and Adam Florian ('15) excelled in the
line outs winning possessions for the Tigers. The fleet-footed duo,
Herbie Williams ('12) and Everton Batista ('12) motored
the ball up the field several times, but each time were stopped
short of the in-goal. Adam Florian appeared to score a try, but it
was called back on a penalty.
The last 10 minutes of the game favored the Tribe who managed to
spread the H-SC defense thin enough to score two more tries
- one un-converted and one converted. The Tigers return
to action on October 1st at 3:00 P.M. on Venable Field
where they square off against the Captains of Christopher Newport
University in their third conference match of the season.
