Rugby Tigers Best Roanoke 50-7

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Tiger Rugby improved to 2-2 on the season and 2-0 in ODAC play. Freshman Adam Florian put H-SC on the scoreboard with a try scored in the 13th minute after a series of rolling rucks put the Tigers within a meter of the in-goal. Everton Batista converted on a difficult kick from the corner, advancing the score by two points. Thirteen minutes later, deep in Roanoke territory, Chris Rhodes executed a flawless 8-man pick off a scrum-down, driving through the Roanoke defenders to add a second try. Batista's kick easily found the space between the posts, raising the ante to 14-0.

The 37th minute began with a scrum-down to H-SC on the Roanoke 22-meter line. A hard push by the Tiger pack put the ball into the capable hands of Scrum-Half, Willis Honeycutt. Solid passing down the back-line set up Herbie Williams to exploit holes in the Roanoke defense, gaining 15 meters. Three rolling rucks later Cabot Armentrout bull-dozed in-goal for the Tiger's third try. Batista easily converted the kick. Perfectly timed passes and well-executed runs put Hampden-Sydney back in front of Roanoke's in-goal just a minute later. Cabot Armentrout delivered again, busting through the Roanoke defense for the Tiger's fourth try.

Continuing to win possession in the line-outs and scrum downs while protecting the ball in the rucks, the H-SC forwards set up multiple opportunities for the backs to move the ball down field. Batista, added additional points for the ruggers, using strategic kicks and blazing speed to score tries in the 45th, 65th and 75th minutes.  However, a Tiger error in the 55th minute produced a penalty try for Maroons – which they easily converted – their only score in the match.

The 78th minute of the match found H-SC driving the ball deep into Roanoke territory. Freshman Tucker Hudgins pulled down a perfect pass from replacement scrum half, Baron Fortune, shot past two Roanoke defenders, and scored the Tiger's final try. Batista converted on three of four kicks in the second half if the match – notching 25 of the Tiger's 50 points on the day.

Hampden-Sydney Rugby returns to action on Saturday, October 22th, at 2:00 p.m. vs. the University of Mary Washington, in Fredricksburg, VA.
