ATLANTA, GA - The Emory University Eagles defeated the Hampden-Sydney College Tigers soccer team 3-0 on Sunday. The win wrapped up the title of the Sonny Carter Invitational for the host Eagles. H-SC garnered third place for the tournament after going 0-2, with the other loss coming at the hands of Oglethorpe University.
Zach Samuels controlled the game for Emory as he contributed on every single score for the match. Jake Graetz scord the first goal of the game at 22:44 as he headed in a Samuels corner kick. Samuels then fed a cross into the box that Nao Masuda headed in to make it a 2-0 contest in the 60th minute. Samuels then netted a goal for himself in the 77th minute as he collected a loose ball in front of the net and booted it in to conclude the scoring.
Emory held impressive edges in in shots (21-9) and corner kicks (11-2) and also committed 12 fouls compared to four for the Tigers. John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) stopepd six eagles shots and Curran Blackwell (Wilson, NC/Greenfield) led the team in shots with three.
Matt Hampton (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam) and Chris Whiteside (Virginia Beach, VA/Frank W. Cox) were named to the All-Tournament team.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action next weekend as they welcome Marymount, Moravian, and Catholic to Farmville, VA, for the annual Hampden-Sydney Classic with games slated to begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
