ASHLAND, VA - The Hampden-Sydney soccer team went on the road to begin a four-game roadstretch and played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer to tie Randolph-Macon 0-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.

In an overtime thriller pitting archrivals, neither team was able to get many good scoring chances as the backlines clamped down on the offenses and the goalies stopped any opportunity that broke through. Luck proved to be on R-MC's side in this game as a Bryan Wharton (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) shot in the first half looked to be going into the goal, but a Macon defender was there to save the day and prevented the shot from going in for the team save. Ranolph-Macon, however, nearly came out with a victory in the waning moments of the game as John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) turned back a Yellow Jacket shot by Ethan Cornelio, sending the game into overtime.

Neither team was able to muster a shot on goal in the first 10-minute overtime period, but with the defenses beginning to get tired going into the final 10-minutes, the offenses started to produce more opportunities at the net. The Tigers unleashed a fury of shots to open the second overtime, but luck proved to not benefit H-SC once again as three of the five shots in the period for the Tigers were blocked. The defense and Plyler came up big once again as R-MC only fired off two shots, both of which were rejected by Plyler.

H-SC outshot R-MC 18-12 and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore defender Curran Blackwell (Wilson, NC/Greenfield) led all players with five shots, two on goal, and Wharton had three shots with all three being on the goal. Cornelio led the Yellow Jackets with three shots. Plyler posted five saves on the game for the shutout. Plyler now has 24 career shutouts, leaving him just two shutouts short of tying the Hampden-Sydney career record. Matty Rocawich totaled five save for R-MC while Randolph-Macon had six for the game.

The Tigers continue their road trip with a rescheduled contest at Lynchburg College on Monday at 7 p.m. The game will mark the second-game of the trip that will consist of four games in eight days.
