HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Catholic University Cardinals soccer team beat the Hampden-Sydney Tigers 3-1 on Sunday afternoon to win the Hampden-Sydney Classic. Catholic, which beat Marymount 1-0 on Saturday, was the only team to win both of its matches. In the other game on Sunday, Marymount beat Moravian 4-0.
Catholic's Mike Brennan scored the first goal of the game at the 17:32 mark, then less than a minute later, a yellow card on Hampden-Sydney gave the Cardinals a direct kick just outside the top right of the box. Nick Sylvester capitalized on the opportunity, bending the ball to the left of the wall and into the back left of the goal and past a leaping John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
H-SC got on the board in the 54th minute as Bryan Wharton (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) tapped in a free kick from the left of the box from Brandon Haynes (Raleigh, NC/Broughton). However, Catholic wasted no time responding to help shift the momentum back in their favor as Brennan tallied his second goal of the game in the 55th minute to secure the championship.
Wharton led the Tigers during the tournament, scoring all three Tiger goals. Plyler registered eight saves on the day while his counterpart on Catholic, Quinn Daly, tallied six stops. CU outshot H-SC 24-14 on the day while H-SC committed 17 fouls compared to only nine for CU.
Hampden-Sydney will look to get back on the winning side this Saturday as they host Randolph College in H-SC's ODAC opener. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. on Miller Field as part of Family Weekend.
