Box Score EMORY, VA (February 6, 2010)—Despite being down 10 points with just 5:48 to play in the game, Hampden-Sydney rallied to tie the game at 69-69, but Emory &Henry's Terrance Grigg hit the dagger with five seconds remaining to lift his Wasps to a 71-69 victory, while the Tigers drop to 11-11 on the year and 6-7 in the ODAC.
The game was close all the way through with 15 lead changes and 10 ties, but the Tigers got off to an early five point lead after a Lane Medlin (West Point, VA/Fork Union) triple put his team up 9-4 at the 15:02 mark.
The Wasps made a run, however, and took a 13-12 lead with 10:16 remaining in the half that they would hold for the next six minutes. The Tigers did not let the deficit grow any larger than four, and after consecutive field goals by Jonathan Mudd (Miami, FL/American) and Harrison George (Raleigh, NC/Leesville) the Tigers tied the game at 19 a piece with 7:17 to go.
A Mudd free throw at the 4:15 mark gave the Tigers a slight 24-23 advantage, but Jordan Short hit a three to change the lead yet again. Sophomore Ben Jessee (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) matched the three to swing the game in the Tigers favor. Over the final two minutes and change, Hampden-Sydney maintained a lead and took a 35-33 advantage into the locker room.
Josh Cunningham provided the 11th lead change of the game after he started off the second half with a three to put the Wasps up 36-35.
The two teams traded baskets, but a Colin O'Neill (Fort Leavenworth, KS/Fort Leavenworth) bucket gave the Tigers a lead they would hold onto for six minutes. Mudd pushed the lead out to six, but the Wasps would not go away, and three consecutive buckets gave Emory and Henry a 52-51 lead at the 10:30 mark.
The Wasps then used a 13-3 run to take the largest lead of the game at 65-55 with 6:27 to play.
Two George free throws cut the lead to eight, but Grigg put it right back at 10 with 5:48 to play. Consecutive shots from O'Neill, Mudd and Randall Ward (Richmond, VA/John Marshall) however brought the Tigers within four with just over four minutes to play.
J.D. Dyson hit a jumper to push the lead to 69-63, but the Tigers did not quit. The scored the next six straight points to tie the game at 69-69 with forty seconds to play. Terrenace Grigg, however, scored the final basket of the game to earn the Wasps their first ODAC win of the season.
Senior Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) led the Tigers with 15 points while George and O'Neill pitched in with 14 and 13 points each. Mudd also had a solid day with 10 points on 4-6 shooting. On the day, Hampden-Sydney was 25-52 (48.1%) from the floor but just 2-11 (18.2%) from beyond the arc.
Dyson led all scorers with 21 points while Grigg poured in 17 points while grabbing nine boards. The Wasps were 24-52 (46.2%) from the floor and a sizzling 11-24 (45.8%) from three.
The Tigers did, however, outrebound Emory & Henry 36-27.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action this Wednesday, February 10 as it travels to face Roanoke College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
