Box Score ROANOKE, VA (February 10, 2010)—Hampden-Sydney returned to the win column with a huge 77-63 win over Roanoke College to improve to 12-11 on the year and 7-7 in the ODAC with just two regular season games remaining. Freshman Harrison George (Raleigh, NC/Leesville) tied his career-high, which came in the Tigers' first meeting with Roanoke, of 24 points while adding 11 rebounds. SeniorTurner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) also continued his hot play with 22 points and five rebounds.
Both teams came out of the gates, but Hampden-Sydney took the early 9-4 advantage after a Karlis Trops (Riga, Latvia/Charlotte Latin) lay up at the 16:00 mark. Roanoke slowly chipped away at the lead and Kwasi Amponsah hit a jumper to put the Maroons up 13-12 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the half.
Roanoke used the next three and a half minutes to push its lead to 22-12, but the Tigers were far from out of it bursting out to a 13-4 over the next four and a half minutes. King and George scored the Tigers' next nine points, and then Hakeem Croom (Harlem, NY/Fishburne) scored two huge buckets to put the Tigers within one at 26-25 with 4:51 to play.
After a scoreless minute, King knocked down a big triple to regain the lead at 28-26. After Melvin Felix tied the game at 28, Hampden-Sydney again spurted out to a 10-0 run, ending the half with a 38-28 lead.
Hampden-Sydney came out in the second half extending the lead to 46-33 after two George free throws. The Maroons stayed in the game, and even brought the game to as close as six when a Matt Crizer triple made it 50-44 just six minutes into the half.
A three from Jonathan Mudd (Miami, FL/American) followed by a Colin O'Neill (Fort Leavenworth, KS/Fort Leavenworth) dunk put the game back to double-digits with a 55-44 Tiger lead.
The Tigers continued to pour it on and obtained their biggest lead of the night at 64-45 after a King lay up at the 7:50 mark.
Roanoke made a furious 12-0 run and at the 3:20 mark trailed just 64-57. King ended the drought, but Kendrick Chittock fired right back with a jumper of his own.
After the teams traded free throws, Hampden-Sydney still led by seven with 1:24 to play and the rest was smooth sailing with George and King knocking down nine of their 10 free throw attempts.
George led all scorers with 24 on 8-12 shooting with a game-high 11 rebounds. King was not far behind with 22 points while Randall Ward (Richmond, VA/John Marshall) and Mudd each added eight points. On the night, the Tigers were hot shooting 51% on 26-51 from the field and 7-16 (43.8%) from three. They were also 18-22 (81.8%) from the charity stripe.
Roanoke was led by Crizer who scored 16 points while Chittock added nine points and five rebounds. The Maroons were just 24-66 (36.4%) from the field and 5-24 (20.8%) from deep.
The Tigers also outrebounded Roanoke 38-33.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action next Wednesday, February 17 as it travels to face #17 RandolphRandolph-Macon College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
