Hampden-Sydney Battles Roanoke to 0-0 Double Overtime Draw

Box Score

SALEM, VA - Hampden-Sydney went on the road to second place Roanoke College and came out of the game with a 0-0 double overtime draw. With the draw, the Tigers earn one point and go up by two points on seventh place Washington & Lee while W&L will play Emory & Henry tomorrow afternoon. With a W&L loss or tie, Hampden-Sydney would earn the sixth seed and go to Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday for the first round of the ODAC Tournament. With a W&L win, the Tigers would be seeded seventh and return to Roanoke College on Saturday.

The play was slow in the first half but picked up in the second half as the Tigers continued to battle, but the Maroons were very dangerous on restarts throughout the night. The Tigers more than held their own in the midfield though as Ryan Fleming (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road) proved to be a spark off the bench.

While each team got off plenty of shots, neither team showed much accuracy on the day. H-SC had 15 shots but just two on goal while Roanoke tallied 24 shots and six on goal. A flurry of shots went off in the waning moments of the second half with H-SC recording three shots in the last five minutes and Roanoke one, but the shots were to no avail as not a single one was on goal.

With 26 seconds left in the first overtime, Roanoke's AJ Tierce headed the ball towards the net but John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) was there to save the day as he prevented the game-winning goal. In the 104th minute, Bo Burns (Raliegh, NC/Leesville Road) nearly won the game for the Tigers, but Roanoke keeper Avery Makel barely tipped the shot wide to preserve the shutout. Roanoke managed two more shots before the end of the game but both sailed wide.

Bryan Wharton (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) had five shots and one on goal while Curran Blackwell (Wilson, NC/Greenfield) had four shots. Plyler played all 110 minutes in net to register a six-save shutout. Tierce led the Maroons with four shots while Makel posted two saves. RC held an 8-5 edge in corner kicks and committed 12 fouls compared to 11 for H-SC.

Hampden-Sydney will play on the road in the ODAC Tournament on Saturday. Opponent and time are to be determined.
