Guilford Defeats Hampden-Sydney 2-1

Box Score

GREENSBORO, NC - The Guilford College Quakers defeated the Hampden-Sydney Tigers soccer team 2-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play from Guilford College on Wednesday night.

The Tigers held a 25-15 advantage in shots and were an aggressive offensive team all night, but the Tigers managed only five shots on goal as many shots ended up being blocked by a Quaker defender. H-SC nearly got on board in the eighth minute as Gregorio Pachecho (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) fired in a shot to the far left post, but the ball hit the bottom of the post and out.

A Tiger foul in the box would prove costly as it gave Freddy Gomez, one of the top goal scorers in the ODAC, a chance for a penalty kick goal. Gomez sent it to the left side of the goal while Tiger keeper John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) dove to the left.

A bit of controversy ensued near the end of the first-half as Guilford goalkeeper Marko Mandalinic came out to grab the ball. He ended up getting kicked with no foul called at the time of the play and dropped the ball. A H-SC player collected the ball and kicked it in the empty net. The referees discussed the play and ruled a foul and thus no goal.

Hampden-Sydney scored the game tier in the 54th minute as Bryan Wharton (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run)beat Mandalinic to the loose ball over 20 yards out and sent in a shot to the top shelf from 20 yards out to make it a 1-1 contest at the 53:09 mark.

H-SC had a few more chances to score, then Guilford's Amir Moore notched the game-winner as he fired off a fabulous strike from 18 yards out to the top of the goal in the 83rd minute, a shot that few goalies would have a chance at stopping.

Hampden-Sydney had major statistical advantages in shots (25-15) and corner kicks (8-0) while Guilford had four saves to two for H-SC. Four different players reeled off four shots for the Tigers while Plyler had two saves. Richard Page and Gomez each had four shots while Mandalinic totaled four stops in net.

Hampden-Sydney will host Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday at 3 p.m. as part of the Homecoming festivities.
