Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (January 9, 2010)—Freshman Harrison George (Raleigh, NC/Leesville)continues to impress, especially in conference play, and after today's performance scouting reports will be sure to include #23. In the Tigers' 89-75 win over Emory & Henry, George did it all tallying 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting, 13 rebounds, seven assists, five steals and two blocks while not turning the ball over once.
The rookie, however, was not alone as four other players had great offensive nights. Sophomore Ben Jessee (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) matched George's team-high 19 points while adding four rebounds.Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) and Randall Ward (Richmond, VA/John Marshall)each netted 14 points while King snared seven boards, and freshman Alex Potapov (Moscow, Russia/Florida Air) scored 11 points.
The game started in Hampden-Sydney's favor with the Tigers jumping out to a 7-2 lead, but at the 17:30 mark, the Wasps answered with a 9-3 run giving them a 13-10 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining in the half.
Karlis Trops (Riga, Latvia/Charlotte Latin) broke the scoring drought with a foul shot that was followed by back-to-back buckets from Jessee and George putting the Tigers back up 15-13. The two teams traded baskets, but the Tigers extended the lead to three before Josh Cunningham tied the game at 22 with a trey.
Emory & Henry then took a slight advantage at 28-26, and a Michael Owens triple extended the Wasp lead to 33-26. Ward and George then combined for six straight points to put the Tigers back within three.
The Wasps, however, did not fold in the final 2:42 peaking with a 42-37 lead at the half.
Head Coach Dee Vick and the Tigers made the proper adjustments at the intermission, coming out to outscore Emory & Henry 13-6 in the first five minutes to take a 50-48 lead. Jesse then hit a three to give the Tigers a five point lead, and they never looked back.
Hampden-Sydney extended the lead to as much as 15 at the 10:58 mark with a 65-50 lead. Emory & Henry chipped into the lead cutting it to 65-55, but George and Potapov pushed the score back to 69-56.
The Wasps were not daunted closing the gap to single digits on two occasions including a push to within eight at 78-70 with 4:21 to play. After Hampden-Sydney pushed the lead back to 10, Ward hit a big three in the corner to put the Tigers up 85-72 with just over a minute.
The Tigers then closed the game out from the foul line winning 89-75. With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 6-7 on the year and 2-3 in the ODAC.
Hampden-Sydney saw five players in double figures and as a team shot 50.8 percent from the field (33-65) and 38.9 percent from beyond the arc (7-18). The Tigers also did a great job of taking care of the ball with 21 assists to just 12 turnovers. Hampden-Sydney also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Wasps 46-32.
Emory & Henry was led by J.D. Dyson who scored a game-high 24 points while Terrance Grigg and Josh Cunningham each added 14 points.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action as it kicks off a four game road stretch with #12 Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, January 13 at 7:00 pm.
