EIGHT TIGERS SCORE IN 15-7 WIN OVER VWC

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (April 11, 2009)—Hampden-Sydney shared the ball incredibly well in their 15-7 over Virginia Wesleyan College as they saw 12 different players record at least one point. Eight of the 12 found the net, including a game high four goals from Andrew Mahoney (Littleton, CO/Littleton).

The Tigers came ready to play right from the first whistle and took a 1-0 lead just 38 seconds into the game as Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) continued his recent scoring frenzy and notched his first goal of the day. After Jett's goal the Tigers never looked back, with Kenny Mathison (East Northport, NY/Northport), and Mahoney each recording goals.

With 4:10 to play in the first quarter, the Marlins' Adam Nycz put his team on the board, but Hampden-Sydney's Whit Kelley (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) responded eight seconds later to put the Tigers up 5-1.

Just 58 seconds into the second quarter, Damain Becker would put his team back within three, but that would be as close as Virginia Wesleyan would come. Over the next nine minutes, the Tigers scored three more unanswered goals before Becker notched his second of the day with 13 ticks left in the half. Instead of going into the locker room up 8-3, junior Kevin Coats (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle)managed to find the next before time expired putting his team up 9-3 at intermission.

The Tigers dominated the third quarter outscoring the Marlins 5-1, with two goals from Mahoney, and one goal for Jett, Mathison, and Doug Carpenter (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's).

Virginia Wesleyan did manage to come alive in the fourth quarter scoring three goals to Hampden-Sydney's one. The Marlins scored the first two goals, but Kevin Coats struck for the second time of the day. Becker would have the final goal of the game giving him a hat trick on the day and bring his Marlins within eight.

Thomas Hovis (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) had an all around great day for the Tigers. The junior had a game-high seven groundballs, two assists, and won nine of his 11 face-off attempts. Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) stopped seven shots that came his way while Ben Hansell (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) had two saves of his own.

Hampden-Sydney won the groundball battle 46-30 and out shot the Marlins 47-32. The Tigers also dominated in face-offs winning 17 to Virginia Wesleyan's 8.

With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 6-6 on the year and 3-1 in the ODAC.

The Tigers will return to action on Wednesday, April 15 as they travel to Lynchburg, VA to take on No. 14 Lynchburg College at 7:00pm.
