H-SC HANGS TOUGH, FALLS TO GUILFORD 62-56

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (February 4, 2008)—Guilford College placed three players in double figures and hit several clutch free throws down the stretch to escape S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium on Wednesday night with a 62-56 win over Hampden-Sydney in front of 1,507 raucous fans clad in white.

The ODAC leading Quakers (16-4, 9-2 ODAC) needed every bit of the production they received from their top-three players, as Clay Henson (19 points), Tyler Sanborn (18 points, 13 rebounds) and Rhett Bonner (14 points, six assists) scored all but 11 of their team's points on a night when Hampden-Sydney nearly sprung one of the biggest conference surprises so far this season.

Down 12 at the half, thanks in part to 32.1 percent shooting from the field and seven turnovers, the Tigers stormed back in the second half behind a rugged defensive effort.

After trading buckets with Guilford over the first 2:09 of the final frame, Hampden-Sydney outscored the Quakers 23-10 over the next 7:25, tying the ball game at 47 on a Ben Jessee (Midlothian, VA/Cosby)jumper with 10:26 to play.

The Tigers' Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic), who poured in a team-high 16 points, tied the score once again at 49-49 two minutes later on a layup off a feed from Lane Medlin (West Point, VA/Fork Union). Hampden-Sydney's defense stiffened for the next 6:24, holding the vaunted Quaker attack to just three points.

But the Tigers managed just two points of their own, missing four shots and turning the ball over four times during that six-plus minute stretch.

A Medlin layup pulled Hampden-Sydney within one, 54-53, with 58 seconds remaining, but Bonner nailed a cold-blooded pull up on the Quakers' ensuing possession, pushing the lead back to three with 41 seconds to play.

After Hampden-Sydney came up short on a three-point attempt, Henson and Bonner went 4-for-4 from the foul line to close out the Tigers, who dropped a fourth straight game for the first time since the 1992-93 season.

The Tigers' fate may have ultimately been sealed in the waning moments of the first half, when the Quakers turned an 18-17 deficit into a 32-20 halftime advantage with a 15-2 run over the final 5:56 of the period. Henson buried consecutive three-point baskets to jump start the spurt and Sanborn provided the exclamation point with a two-handed jam with four seconds remaining.

King scored 12 of his 16 in the second half, shot 6-of-13 from the floor and pulled down six rebounds in 37 minutes of play. Junior Jonathan Mudd (Miami, FL/American) was exceptional all evening, notching 12 points and snaring five rebounds.

Medlin finished with eight boards for the Tigers, who shot 39.3 percent from the floor for the game, but just 21.4 percent (6-for-28) from the three-point line.

Guilford shot just 32.1 percent in the second half, but made 40 percent (8-for-20) from beyond the arc for the game and made more free throws (12) than Hampden-Sydney attempted (10). The Quakers out-rebounded the Tigers 38-36.

Hampden-Sydney (9-12, 4-8 ODAC) will return to the hardwood on Saturday, February 7 when it hosts Emory and Henry College for a 2:00 pm tip.
