Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (December 2, 2009)—Freshman Harrison George (Raleigh, NC/Leesville) let the ODAC know just who he was tonight as he poured in 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting in the Tigers' 90-76 win over Roanoke College. With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 3-1 and 1-0 in the conference.
Things did not look good early for the Tigers, however, as Roanoke started off on a 10-1 run in the first two and a half minutes. Senior Jonathan Mudd (Miami, FL/American) knocked down two free throws to give the Tigers a spark that ignited a 17-8 run that tied the game at 18 with a Randall Ward (Richmond, VA/John Marshall) three pointer.
Senior Karlis Trops (Riga, Latvia/Charlotte Latin) gave the Tigers their first lead of the night on a three pointer, but it was short lived as Parrish Walker knocked down two consecutive shots giving the Maroons a 22-21 lead with 8:21 remaining in the half.
The two teams continued to trade baskets, and Roanoke built its lead to six with just under three minutes to play, but Hampden-Sydney responded over the next minute and a half to cut the lead to 42-40 off of a George lay up. Roanoke, however, scored the last two buckets of the half to take a 46-40 lead into intermission.
Though Roanoke scored the first points of the second half, Hampden-Sydney poured in seven straight to cut the lead to 48-47. The next seven minutes were back-and-forth with four ties and three lead changes. The Tigers finally got a 60-58 advantage off of two George free throws and never looked back.
Matt Crizer hit a three pointer that tied the game at 65, but the Tigers went on a 14-0 run in four minutes behind eight points from Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic), four points from Ben Jessee (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) and two from George.
Two consecutive Maroons baskets put the Tiger lead back to single digits at 79-71, but Colin O'Neill (Fort Leavenworth, KS/Fort Leavenworth) and King put the lead back to double figures at the 3:23 mark.
The final minutes saw each team score four more points, giving the Tigers' their first ODAC win of the year in as many games with the 90-76 victory.
Roanoke edged the Tigers in rebounding 38-35 and outshot Hampden-Sydney 48.4% (30-62) to the Tigers' 47% (31-66). Hampden-Sydney, however, connected on 18-22 (81.8%) from the charity stripe while Roanoke was 7-12 (58.3%).
George's career day of 24 points and seven rebounds led the Tigers while King added 20 and Jessee put in 19 points. Ward had a solid day at the point chipping in nine points while adding a career-high six assists.
Roanoke had five players in double figures with Matt Crizer leading the way with 16. Walker Parrish, Michael McKeough, Logan Singleton and Kendrick Chittock all had 10 points.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action this Saturday as they head to Salisbury, MD to play in the Salisbury University Optimist Classic. The Tigers will play Ramapo College of New Jersey in the first game. Tip off is set for 1:00 pm.
