Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (November 29, 2009)—Hampden-Sydney earned its second win in as many days with a 79-71 victory over Shenandoah University in the final game of the Main St. Lanes South Region Hoops Challenge. Senior Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) led the Tigers for the second time this season tallying a game-high 20 points.

King and the Tigers looked to pull away early, starting the game on a 7-0 run before Mitchell Dudley snared an offensive rebound and put it back up to put the Hornets on the board at the 16:44 mark. Hampden-Sydney, however, continued to pour it on, outscoring Shenandoah 14-5 over the next five minutes.

The 21-7 lead, though, was put in jeopardy as the Hornets rallied and a Dudley foul shot at the 8:17 mark cut the lead to single digits at 23-14. Shenandoah got as close as five points, but buckets fromBen Jessee (Midlothian, VA/Cosby), Jonathan Mudd (Miami, FL/American) and Harrison George (Raleigh, NC/Leesville) pushed the Tiger lead back to 36-27 with 2:35 to play in the half.

Though two foul shots from Mudd pushed the Tiger lead to 41-30, Shenandoah slightly closed the gap and a Chris Schrader three pointer at the buzzer put the halftime score at 43-35.

As the second stanza began, the two teams traded baskets with Hampden-Sydney starting to pull away eight minutes in, building a 55-45 lead. The Hornets kept coming, though, and after Kevin Kline scored four straight points, the Tiger lead was down to 56-50. Three minutes later, Dudley cut into the lead again, and his free throw put the game at a too-close-for-comfort 59-57.

A clutch three pointer from Jessee at the 3:51 mark was able to give the Tigers a little breathing room with a 66-59 cushion. Both teams exchanged baskets, but leading 70-65, Hampden-Sydney scored on three consecutive foul shots and claimed a 73-65 advantage with just over one minute to play.

Shenandoah added six more points, but five straight free throws from Jessee and Colin O'Neill (Fort Leavenworth, KS/Fort Leavenworth) gave the Tigers their final 79-71 advantage.

King led all scorers with 20 points while adding a team-high six rebounds. Jessee and Mudd also had solid outings posting 16 and 10 points. The Hornets had two players post double-doubles with Dudley scoring 17 points and adding 10 rebounds and Schrader adding 16 points and 10 caroms.

The Tigers were outrebounded 40-29, but shot over 50% for the second consecutive night going 25-49 from the field. Hampden-Sydney also took care of the ball, dishing out 14 assists to just 12 turnovers.

In the other game of the day, North Carolina Wesleyan defeated Mary Washington 77-71with four players scoring in double figures.

The Tigers return to action at home on December 2 as they face ODAC foe Roanoke College. Tip off is set for 7:00 pm.
