Box Score GREENSBORO, NC (January 19, 2008)—A size disadvantage in the game of basketball can be difficult to overcome, and Guilford College has the perfect weapon at its disposal in order to exploit that truth against its opponents.
The defending Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions deployed 6-foot-9 Tyler Sanborn at will on Hampden-Sydney in the second half, using the junior's size and strength inside to corral 20 offensive boards as a team and muscle their way to a 69-51 league victory over the Tigers at Ragan-Brown Field House.
The loss to Guilford snapped a three-game winning streak for Hampden-Sydney (8-8, 3-4 ODAC), and helped the Quakers stay in the ODAC regular season title hunt at 6-1 in the league and 13-3 overall.
Sanborn was a major reason that Guilford extended its winning streak over Hampden-Sydney to five games.
Once a second-in-command to former National Player of the Year Ben Strong, Sanborn provided Guilford fans with a little welcomed déjà vu, putting up Strong-like numbers in the decisive second half. Sanborn scored 11 of his game-high 19 points and snared nine of his game-high 15 rebounds in the final stanza. Seven of those caroms came on the offensive glass.
For the most part, Hampden-Sydney played well enough on the defensive end to pull off their fourth straight win. The Tigers held the Quakers to 41.5 percent shooting for the game, 38.2 percent in the second half.
But 14 offensive rebounds eased the pain of Guilford's shooting woes, as did 16 takeaways that afforded Guilford 11 more looks at the rim.
The Tigers gave Guilford leading scorer Clay Henson fits for the majority of the game. Henson, who came into the contest the league's second leading scorer behind the Tigers' Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) at 20.1 points-per-game, had just seven points to his name late in the second half. But the junior rattled off two straight triples at the three minute mark as part of a 14-0, game-clinching run that turned a tight 55-49 game at 6:27 into a 69-49 sleeper with 47 seconds left. Henson finished with 13 points on 5-of-15 shooting.
King was brilliant for the Tigers once again, netting a team-high 19 points and pulling down a team-best nine boards. He scored the first five Hampden-Sydney points and tallied 13 for the opening half, shooting a blistering 5-for-7 to open the contest.
Running mate Ben Jessee (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) followed King with 14 points courtesy of four three-pointers, but no other Tiger managed more than six points for the game, a direct result of the team's 33.3 percent shooting. A team that came into the game shooting over 37 percent from beyond the arc, Hampden-Sydney knocked down just 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) from deep.
George Neville scored 12 points, 11 in the first half, helping the Quakers to a 35-33 halftime lead. Neville and was also a menace on the glass, recording nine total rebounds, five of which were offensive.
Colin O'Neill (Fort Leavenworth, KS/Leavenworth) finished with six points and three rebounds.Jonathan Mudd (Miami, FL/American) grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists.
Hampden-Sydney has another quick turnaround as it will get set to host Lynchburg College on Wednesday, January 21 at 7:00 pm.
