Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (February 13, 2008)�The Hampden-Sydney basketball team was within three points, 64-61, with eight minutes left to play, but the Quakers knocked down their free throws late to earn a 78-71 victory over the Tigers at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium on Wednesday night. Hampden-Sydney enjoyed balanced scoring as sophomore Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) led three players in double-figures with 16 points, but the 15th-ranked Quakers got a game-high 32 points from Ben Strong for the victory. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney drops to 11-10 on the season and 5-9 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while Guilford improves to 17-4 overall and 12-2 in the ODAC.
Guilford opened the game on a 17-7 run to take an early ten-point lead at the 15:41 mark, but the Tigers were able to cut the lead to three points, 19-16, on a three-pointer by senior Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan School). The Quakers pushed the lead back to ten points, 43-33, with 1:11 left until halftime. On the Tigers' next possession, King hit a three point field goal to cut the lead to seven points, but Guilford's Tyler Sanborn made a lay-up with 23 seconds remaining to give the Quakers a nine-point advantage, 45-36, at halftime.
Hampden-Sydney opened the second half on a 10-4 run to cut the Quaker lead to three points, 49-46, at 14:19 mark. The Tigers would get to within one point, 53-52, at the 13:26 mark, but Guilford went on a 9-2 run to push the lead back to eight points, 62-54. With 7:56 left to play, junior Jyri Laakso (Oulu, Finland/Makelanrinne) made a free throw pull the Tigers to within three, 64-61. Holding a six point lead with just 3:05 remaining, the Quakers made several free throws down the stretch to earn the 78-71 victory.
Hampden-Sydney had three players score in double-figures, led by King with 16 points and seven rebounds. Also scoring in double-figures for the Tigers were Drew Prehmus with 13 points and five assists and Byron Lawton (High Point, NC/Wesleyan Academy) with 11 points and five assists. Hampden-Sydney senior Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring)finished with eight points and seven rebounds. Guilford was led by Ben Strong who scored 32 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, while Tyler Sanborn and T.C. Anderson finished with 13 and ten points respectively.
The Tigers shot 42.4 (25-of-59) percent from the field, including 35.7 (10-of-28) percent from behind-the-arc, and 73.3 (11-of-15) percent from the charity stripe, while the Quakers finished at 45.9 percent from the field, and made just 22.2 percent of their shots from behind-the-arc. Guilford also connected on 81.8 percent of their free throws. The Quakers held an advantage over the Tigers on the boards, 40-32.
