Box Score GREENSBORO, NC (January 9, 2008)�Hampden-Sydney's winning streak ended at seven games as the Tigers fell to Guilford College, 93-79, on Wednesday night at Ragan Brown Fieldhouse. Hampden-Sydney enjoyed balanced scoring as four players scored in double-figures, but it was not enough as 11th-ranked Guilford enjoyed 34 points from Ben Strong in the victory. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney drops to 7-2 on the season and 1-1 in the conference, while Guilford improves to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the ODAC.
Hampden-Sydney opened the game with a 7-2 run, but Guilford battled back, taking a 15-10 lead at the 13:17 mark in the first half. Trailing 19-10, the Tigers went on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to five points, but the Quakers answered with 14-0 run to build a 35-16 advantage with 4:26 remaining until halftime. Over the next three minutes, Hampden-Sydney chipped away at the lead, receiving three-pointers from Byron Lawton (High Point, NC/Wesleyan Academy)and Paul Matthews (Greenburg, PA/Greenburg Salem), but Guilford was able to maintain a ten-point advantage, 43-33, at the half.
The Tigers and Quakers traded baskets for the first couple of minutes of the second half before Guilford went on a 12-2 run to take a 66-43 lead with 14:38 left to play. Over the next eight minutes, the Tigers were able to cut into the lead; however, they were unable to get closer than 14 points. Trailing 84-70, Hampden-Sydney went on an 8-3 run to cut the lead to nine points with a little over a minute remaining; however, Guilford hit free throws down the stretch to preserve the 93-79 win.
Hampden-Sydney had four players score in double figures and was led by sophomore Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) who scored 17 points, while senior Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan School) finished with 16 points. Also scoring in double-figures for the Tigers were Tyler Murray (Atlanta, GA/Harrison) and Byron Lawton with 14 and 13 points respectively. Guilford was led by Ben Strong who scored 34 points, while Clay Henson finished 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field.
The Tigers shot 44.3 (27-of-61) percent from the field, including 37.9 (11-of-29) percent from behind-the-arc and 63.6 (14-of-22) percent from the charity stripe, while the Quakers finished at 50.8 percent from the field and 50.0 from behind-the-arc. The Quakers out-rebounded the Tigers, 46-25.
