HAMPDEN-SYDNEY SCORES 86-72 VICTORY OVER EASTERN MENNONITE

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (January 13, 2008)�Hampden-Sydney's basketball team improved to 8-3 overall and 2-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference as the Tigers scored an 86-72 victory over ODAC-foe Eastern Mennonite on Sunday afternoon at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. The Tigers shot 55.9 percent from field and 50.0 percent from three-point range, making 10-of-20 shots from behind-the-arc to defeat the Royals. Hampden-Sydney was led by senior forward Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) with 20 points, while three other Tigers also scored in double-figures. With the loss, Eastern Mennonite drops to 4-6 on the season and 1-3 in the ODAC.

Hampden-Sydney opened the game with a 6-2 run in the first two and a half minutes of the game. The two teams traded the lead six times, before the Tigers took an 18-17 advantage on a Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan School) three-point field goal with 13:28 remaining in the half. Over the next eight minutes, the Tigers went on an 18-3 run to build a 36-20 lead. A pair of three-pointers by D.J. Hinson cut the Tiger lead to nine points at halftime, 41-32.

The Tigers opened the second half with three points by Kaase, before Eastern Mennonite went on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to seven points, 44-37. The Tigers would answer, building a 13-point advantage, 56-43, on a lay-up by Karlis Trops (Riga, Latvia/Charlotte Latin). The Tigers and Royals would trade baskets over the next eight minutes, with the Tigers holding a double-digit lead. Eastern Mennonite would cut the lead to ten points, 80-70, with 1:44 left to play, but that would be as close as they would get as the Tigers went on for the 86-72 victory.

Hampden-Sydney had four players score in double-figures, led by Kaase with 20 points and six rebounds, while sophomore Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) added 18 points. Also scoring in double-figures for Hampden-Sydney was Prehmus with 15 points, while juniorByron Lawton (High Point, NC/Wesleyan Academy) added 11 points. Eastern Mennonite was led by Jered Lyons who scored 14 points, while George Johnson added 13 points. D.J. Hinson and Brad Parkes scored 12 points apeice.

The Tigers shot 55.9 (33-of-59) percent from the field, including 50.0 (10-of-20) percent from behind-the-arc, and 58.8 (10-of-17) percent from the charity stripe. Eastern Mennonite finished the game at 42.1 percent from the field and 44.0 percent from three-point range. The Tigers out-rebounded the Royals, 40-26.
