Box Score (September 28, 2007) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden-Sydney erased an 82nd minute, one-goal deficit and took the lead with two goals in a matter of 20 seconds to pull out a thrilling 2-1 victory over visiting Guilford College. Junior midfielder Jason Butler (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) connected on the equalizer with 8:21 remaining in the match, and junior forward Ian Ciejek (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) followed with a goal of his own at the 8:01 mark to stun the upstart Quakers, who had enjoyed a 1-0 lead for over 70 minutes of play.
The win keeps the Tigers unbeaten in ODAC play at 2-0-1 and improves their overall record to 5-4-1 - Hampden-Sydney is now unbeaten in its last five matches. Guilford drops to 3-8 overall, and 1-3 in the ODAC.
Although the Tigers worked magic late, it appeared that Guilford was poised to steal a conference win on the road. The Quakers scored in the 11th minute on a Joe Rigert effort from the top of the box for an early 1-0 advantage.
The remainder of the half was played evenly, with both teams firing six shots apiece. With just over one minute to play in the opening frame, Tigers' goalkeeper John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) made a tremendous top-shelf save on a Guilford free kick to preserve the one-goal deficit at half.
Hampden-Sydney controlled much of the second half, out-shooting the Quakers 15-3 in the period. The Tigers nearly equalized the match with 24 minutes remaining, when junior midfielder Jason Powell (Marietta, GA/Pope) put his volley off the crossbar.
Hampden-Sydney continued to apply pressure, and with just under nine minutes to play, Ciejek was fouled in the penalty area. Sophomore JoJo Howard (Lanexa, VA/New Kent) saw his penalty shot blocked, but Butler drove home the rebound to push the score even at 1-1.
Just 20 seconds later, Butler placed a long ball at the feet of Ciejek, who had his first attempt blocked right back to his own feet. Ciejek calmly connected on his rebound attempt to give the Tigers their first and only lead of the game.
Hampden-Sydney would hold off Guilford for the final eight minutes of action to seal their fourth win in their last five games. For the game, the Tigers out-shot the Quakers 21-9, and Plyler recorded four saves en route to his fourth win in five starts.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action next Tuesday, Oct. 2 as they travel to Bridgewater College for a 4 pm kickoff.
