TIGERS BATTLE TO 0-0 TIE WITH EMU

Box Score

(September 25, 2007) HARRISONBURG, VA – Hampden-Sydney fired 21 shots, nine of which were on target, but were unable to convert and settled for a 0-0 tie after 120 minutes of soccer against host Eastern Mennonite University. The Tigers remain unbeaten in conference play at 1-0-1, and even overall at 4-4-1. The Royals, who received a gritty effort from goalkeeper Jackson Maust, move to 1-1-1 in the ODAC and 2-5-2 overall.

Hampden-Sydney out-shot the EMU 10-6 in the first half and saw several excellent scoring chances fall just short. The Tigers' best chance came in the 34th minute, when sophomore forward Will Robertson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) broke through the defense and fired a low shot far-post. The ball deflected off the post and onto the feet of a charging Michael Krewinghaus (Yorktown, VA/Tabb), whose blast from six yards out was blocked by a Royals' defenseman.

The Tigers' barrage continued with the opening kickoff of the second half, as Hampden-Sydney put two shots on frame in the first minute of play. Senior midfielder Greg Danahy (Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley) let loose from 35 yards out, only to be denied on an acrobatic save from Maust. Seconds later, junior Jason Powell (Marietta, GA/Pope) saw his breakaway shot saved by Maust, keeping the match scoreless once again.

Fresh off of his Player of the Week honor, Tigers' keeper John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) held the Royals at bay with two huge saves in the final 22 minutes of regulation to help send the match into sudden-death overtime.

In two overtime periods, neither team was able to notch a goal, and another Plyler stop on a restart as time expired secured the tie for both sides.

Plyler recorded a career high eight saves en route to his second career shutout. Robertson tallied six shots, while Krewinghaus and Powell both registered four shots apiece, two of which were on goal for each player.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action on Friday, Sept. 28 when they welcome ODAC foe Guilford College to Miller Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 pm.
