TIGERS CRUISE PAST ALVERNIA, 4-0

Box Score

(September 2, 2007) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Senior midfielder Greg Danahy (Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley) scored two goals and midfielders Jason Butler (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and JoJo Howard (Lanexa, VA/New Kent) each recorded two assists as Hampden-Sydney rolled to a 4-0 victory over Alvernia in the final game of the 2007 Arby's/H-SC Soccer Classic. The Tigers out-shot the Crusaders 19-2 on their way to evening their season record at 1-1.

The Tigers wasted little time getting on the board, as junior midfielder Jason Powell (Marietta, GA/Pope) headed in a Butler cross from six yards out in the 21st minute. Hampden-Sydney would continue to pressure, firing eight shots on goal in the first half, and taking a 2-0 lead to the break after Danahy converted the first of his two goals in the 44th minute - a blast from ten yards away following another excellent long ball from Butler.

In the 57th minute, junior midfielder Michael Krewinghaus (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) found an open Danahy at the top of the box, who calmly slipped a shot just past the outstretched arms of Alvernia keeper Richard Kessler for a 3-0 advantage.

Sophomore forward David Burley (Mount Pleasant, SC/Wando) would conclude the Tiger scoring with just over 20 minutes to play, as he drove home a rebound following a JoJo Howard strike that caromed off the left post. The goal was Burley's first of 2007 and fourteenth of his 20 match career.

Junior keeper Ben Marchetti (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) recorded one save in earning his eleventh career shutout, placing him in a tie for second on the Hampden-Sydney all-time career shutouts list.

Kessler stopped seven shots for the Crusaders, who fell to 0-2 on the season.

In the first game of the afternoon, Lynchburg midfielder Phil Francois recorded a hat trick, giving him five goals for the Classic and helping the Hornets to 3-1 result over Ursinus. With the win, Lynchburg took home their second consecutive Arby's/H-SC Classic crown.

Lynchburg fell behind in the 42nd minute after Ursinus' Othmane Boutayeb headed a ball past Hornets keeper Marcus Jordan for a 1-0 lead. The Hornets would answer just one minute later with Francois' first strike - a free kick from 22 yards out that found the upper left corner of the net, making the score 1-1 at the break.

Francois struck again with just over 23 minutes remaining in the match with a 20 yard rocket that slipped just inside the left post to give Lynchburg a 2-1 lead. The Hornets possessed the ball over the final eight minutes of the match, and Francois would earn his hat trick by converting a penalty kick in the 90th minute.

The Hornets placed five players on the all-tournament team: Francois, Stephen Brooks, Patrick Brown, Modou Jobarteh and Matthew Rowe. Ursinus' John George, Ted Hooven and Steve Sullivan also garnered all-tournament honors along with Alvernia's Nathaniel Swarr. Two Tigers earned all-tournament recognition - Danahy and freshman defender Sam Turner (Richmond, VA/Benedictine).
