Box Score (September 19, 2007) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – The Tigers notched a 22nd minute goal from junior midfielder Jason Powell (Marietta, GA/Pope) and freshman goalkeeper John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) earned his first collegiate shutout as Hampden-Sydney claimed a 1-0 victory over visiting Randolph-Macon in the first conference contest of 2007 for both sides. Hampden-Sydney out-shot the Yellow Jackets 17-6 en route to improving their record to 3-4 (1-0 ODAC). With the loss, Randolph-Macon drops to 2-5 (0-1 ODAC).
The Tigers' goal was set up by a brilliant play from sophomore forward Will Robertson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic). Robertson beat a defender in the corner and delivered a slicing ball into the box and onto the feet of a cutting Powell, who finished the leaping volley with authority to give Hampden-Sydney the early one goal advantage.
Hampden-Sydney would fire nine total shots in the opening half, but Randolph-Macon goalkeeper Jason DePre recorded five saves to keep the Yellow Jackets' deficit at 1-0 going into halftime.
The Tigers' aggressive play earned them seven corner kicks in the second half, but they were unable to convert and extend their lead. Randolph-Macon applied tremendous pressure in the final 20 minutes of the match, only to be turned away by the solid play of Hampden-Sydney's back four - sophomores Michael Carter (Fredericksburg, VA/Massaponax) and Christopher Tait (Nokesville, VA/Brentsville) and freshmen Matt Swaney (Potomac Falls, VA/Potomac Falls) and Sam Turner (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) - and Plyler, who moved to 2-0 in his career with another strong performance.
Hampden-Sydney will take a brief respite from conference play and return to action on their home turf when they host Piedmont College this Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1 pm.
