H-SC JUMPS AHEAD EARLY, SCORES 3-1 VICTORY OVER CATHOLIC

Box Score

(September 15, 2007) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden-Sydney scored twice within the first eight minutes of the match and freshman keeper John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) recorded six saves in his first collegiate start as the Tigers ended a three-match losing skid with an impressive 3-1 win over visiting Catholic University. Senior midfielder Greg Danahy (Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley) scored his third goal of the season, while sophomore forward Will Robertson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) and freshman midfielder Eamon Penland (Elgin, SC/Spring Valley) tallied their first goals of the season to lead Hampden-Sydney.

The Tigers kicked off their scoring in the sixth minute of action, when newly-named captain Jason Butler (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) served a beautiful ball to the chest of a streaking Danahy, who calmly headed the ball over Cardinals' goalie Quinn Daly from eight yards out for a quick 1-0 advantage.

Two minutes later, Robertson collected the ball following a Cardinals' turnover and beat two defenders with the dribble before finishing with his left foot from 18 yards away to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.

The Tigers continued to control play throughout a physical second half, and extended their lead to 3-0 in the 80th minute when Robertson found Penland in space on the right flank. Penland beat a defender and scooted a nifty shot under the dive of the charging Daly for his first collegiate goal.

Catholic got on the board with just four minutes to play courtesy of an Adrian Davis rebound finish following two spectacular saves from Plyler, who blocked consecutive close-range blasts before Davis found space.

The Tigers improve to 2-4 with the win, while Catholic drops to 3-3 on the season.

The win gives Hampden-Sydney plenty of momentum heading into their first ODAC contest of 2007 - a home date with rival Randolph-Macon on Wednesday, Sept. 19. Match kickoff is scheduled for 4 pm at Miller Field.
