MARYMOUNT EARNS 2-0 VICTORY OVER SOCCER TIGERS

Box Score

(September 12, 2007) ARLINGTON, VA – Marymount University scored two goals within a five minute span in the second half to break open a scoreless match and secure a 2-0 win over visiting Hampden-Sydney. With the loss, the Tigers drop to 1-4 on the year, while the Saints improve to 2-3.

Neither team was able to capitalize during a seesaw first half. Hampden-Sydney saw their best scoring chance come up just short in the 24th minute, as sophomore midfielder JoJo Howard (Lanexa, VA/New Kent) pushed a header just wide of the goal off a nifty free kick service from fellow sophomore Will Robertson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic). Tigers keeper Ben Marchetti (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) kept the Saints scoreless in the first half, recording three saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep Marymount at bay.

The Saints would strike quickly in the second half, however, as Marymount forward Alex Lubinsky capitalized from eight yards out in the 52nd minute following a low cross from teammate Inty Arteaga. Five minutes later, the Saints' Daniel Lozano corralled a rebounded shot and blasted it home far post for a 2-0 advantage just 12 minutes into the final half.

Hampden-Sydney would press up for the remainder of the half, but could not convert on any of their 11 second half shot attempts. Marymount keeper William Brahmstedt stopped four shots in the second half, and Marymount held on to preserve their second win of the season.

After three games on the road, the Tigers will finally return home Saturday, Sept. 15, as they host Catholic University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2pm at Miller Field.
