In the second half, both sides battled hard and saw several chances come up just short. Powell nearly gave Hampden-Sydney the lead with 20 minutes remaining, but had his breakaway attempt sail high. Sophomore forward Will Robertson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) placed his chip over a charging Taylor just wide of the goal with 8:30 to play. In the second overtime, senior midfielder Greg Danahy (Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley) collected a ball near the center of the field and found Powell streaking toward the box. Powell gathered his feet and calmly pushed a low shot past Taylor for the golden goal – his third goal of the season.
Hampden-Sydney junior midfielder James Bishop (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Latin) sparked the Tigers upon entering the game at the start of the second half, helping control the flow of the game and disrupting Ferrum's midfield play with his physical presence.
Junior midfielder Michael Krewinghaus (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) also gave a solid effort for the Tigers in the crucial win.
