Box Score (October 8, 2007) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden-Sydney junior goalkeeper Ben Marchetti (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) stopped six Randolph College shots en route to his 12th career shutout to help the Tigers to a 0-0 draw with the visiting Wildcats. The Tigers out-shot Randolph 25-7 and earned ten corner kick opportunities to Randolph's zero, but were unable to find the back of the net in 110 minutes of action. With the tie, the Tigers' record moves to 6-5-2, while the Wildcats improve to 2-6-1 on the season.
After a scoreless first half that saw just seven shots attempted, the two sides picked up the pace in the second half. The Tigers out-shot the Wildcats 11-4 in the second frame, but it was Marchetti who made two important saves on Randolph forward Jonathon Bolton, one in the 50th minute and the other with 16 minutes to play, to maintain a scoreless match.
In two overtime periods, the Tigers held Randolph to just one shot, but could not capitalize on nine opportunities of their own, and settled for the draw.
With the shutout, Marchetti stands alone in second place in the Hampden-Sydney record books for career shutouts. Sophomore forward Will Robertson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) was dangerous all afternoon, firing seven shots for the Tigers.
Randolph goalkeeper Aaron Humphreys recorded a stellar performance in net for the Wildcats, tallying 11 saves.
Hampden-Sydney returns to the field tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 9 when it travels to Ferrum College. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
