Both teams battled hard in the first 45 minutes, but it was Washington and Lee who held a one goal advantage at the conclusion of the frame. The Generals out-shot the Tigers 8-5 in the first half, and took their 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when midfielder Tommy Pignatelli converted on a breakaway opportunity, beating Plyler far post from 18 yards out.
Hampden-Sydney pushed hard for the equalizer early on in the second half, and was able to knot the score at 1-1 with 36:54 to play when Robertson squeaked a header near post past Generals' goalkeeper Ted Sheedy. Each team fired 11 shots in the second stanza, but in the final 37 minutes, Plyler made several critical plays for Hampden-Sydney.
With Washington and Lee making dangerous runs for a ten minute stretch in the middle of the half, Plyler made four gigantic saves to keep the score locked. He made a wonderful kick save with 25 minutes to play, and followed that up with three one-on-one saves on Generals' midfielder Whitt Larkin, guiding the Tigers into overtime.
Neither team was able to convert on its two shots in the first extra frame, but both keepers came up big in the second overtime.
Sheedy was able to deny Tigers' sophomore midfielder JoJo Howard (Lanexa, VA/New Kent) a golden goal opportunity with a sliding save in the 103rd minute after Howard had received a brilliant slip at the top of the box from junior midfielder Jason Powell (Marietta, GA/Pope).
Plyler stepped up with 4:50 to play as he stopped a dangerous 20-yard blast from Generals' midfielder Josh Dodds.
Washington and Lee out-shot Hampden-Sydney 24-19 for the match, with the Tigers holding a narrow edge in corner kicks at 6-4.
