BIG FIRST HALF HELPS TIGERS TOP ROANOKE, 4-1

Box Score

(October 20, 2007) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden-Sydney junior midfielder Jason Powell (Marietta, GA/Pope) scored 1:04 into the match, the first of four first half goals for the Tigers, as Hampden-Sydney gathered their fourth straight win and ninth in their last 12 matches with a 4-1 victory over visiting Roanoke College. Junior midfielder Michael Krewinghaus (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) added two goals of his own, his first strikes of the season, and Powell scored once more in the period as the Tigers improved to 10-5-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the ODAC. With the loss, the Maroons fall to 9-7, 5-3 in conference play.

After Powell put the Tigers up 1-0 following a brilliant feed from freshman midfielder Matt Hampton (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam), the Tigers used effective distribution to extend their lead to three goals within the next 18 minutes.

At the 7:59 mark, Hampton once again provided Powell with a useful ball at the corner of the box, and after forcing Roanoke goalkeeper Austin Rose to commit, Powell found Krewinghaus at the six who buried his shot for the 2-0 advantage.

In the 20th minute, senior midfielder Greg Danahy (Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley) served a ball into the box where Jason Butler (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) won the jumping battle with Rose, heading a ball to the feet of Krewinghaus who finished for his second goal of the game and a 3-0 lead.

With 18:36 to play in the first half, Powell struck again, this time collecting his own rebound and finishing a blast from point blank range to give Hampden-Sydney a 4-0 first half advantage.

Roanoke put intense pressure on the Tigers in the early portion of the second half, but saw several good opportunities come up just short. Freshman goalkeeper John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) made two critical saves in the first 15 minutes, preventing the Maroons from scoring an early goal and gaining much needed momentum.

Midway through the second half, Powell narrowly missed his bid for a hat trick when his rocket from 16 yards out went off the right post.

Roanoke would reach the scoreboard in the 79th minute when midfielder Eric Eversole drilled a free kick opportunity from 25 yards out.

Despite falling behind early, the Maroons held the advantage in both shots (13-11) and corner kicks (4-3).

The win was the final regular season home match for three Tiger seniors: Danahy, Kris Barnes (Virginia Beach, VA, Kempsville) and Michael Eagan (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian).

The Tigers will look to seize the top-seed in the upcoming ODAC Tournament when they travel to conference leader Washington and Lee on Tuesday, Oct. 23 for a 4 pm match. As of Saturday afternoon, the Tigers sit in a tie for first place with the Generals with 19 points.
