Box Score (October 2, 2007) BRIDGEWATER, VA – Hampden-Sydney sophomore forward Will Robertson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) scored one goal and assisted on another to lead the Tigers to a 3-1 road victory over ODAC-foe Bridgewater College. Robertson connected on the go-ahead goal just seconds into the second half to break a scoreless tie and propel Hampden-Sydney to their fifth win in their last six outings.
The Tigers and Eagles battled in the opening half, but neither team was able to capitalize. Just 45 seconds into the final stanza, senior midfielder Greg Danahy (Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley) placed a long ball at the feet of Robertson, who calmly pushed the ball past the keeper and finished with his left foot for the first goal of the match and his third of the season.
Hampden-Sydney would see three excellent chances come up short, but would finally take a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute on a Jason Butler (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) rebound following a blocked Robertson attempt. Butler's goal was his second in as many games and third on the season.
In the 68th minute, sophomore forward David Burley (Mount Pleasant, SC/Wando) took a brilliant feed from Robertson at the top of the box and slipped it by charging Eagles' keeper Zane Lineberry for a 3-0 Tiger lead.
Hampden-Sydney goalkeeper John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) made two magnificent saves in the final 19 minutes of play to hold off a late Bridgewater rally. Bridgewater converted on a free kick opportunity with just 43 seconds to play to account for the final 3-1 score.
The Tigers received a tremendous performance from junior defender Robert Baybutt (Richmond, VA/Lee Davis), who made an emergency start and played the entire 90 minutes. His leadership in the back and distribution helped boost the Tigers to victory.
Hampden-Sydney maintains their unblemished ODAC record (3-0-1) and improves to 6-4-1 overall. Bridgewater drops to 2-10, 1-4 in the ODAC.
The Tigers return to ODAC action this Saturday, Oct. 6, as the team travels to Virginia Wesleyan for a 2 pm match.
