Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden Sydney's soccer team dominated in a game against Ferrum College, winning by a score of 5-0. The Tigers were only able to score one goal in the first half; however, the Tiger offense exploded in the second half, scoring four goals.
Sophomore forward Ian Ciejek (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin) found the back of the net first for the Tigers as he beat two Ferrum defenders on his way toward the goal. In the second half, freshman forward David Burley (Mount Pleasant, SC/Wando) scored following a pass from senior captain Greg Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier). Only four minutes later, Burley scored again following brilliant passes from Ciejek and Smith. Sophomore Reed Westra (Chester, VA/L.C. Bird) and senior Robbie O'Cain (Asheville, NC/Asheville) finished out the scoring for the Tigers.
Although Hampden-Sydney's offense put on a show, the Tiger defense controlled most of the game by stopping most of Ferrum's opportunities. The Tiger defense and midfield worked well as a team as Hampden-Sydney recorded its third shutout in as many games. Hampden-Sydney finished the afternoon out shooting Ferrum by a margin of 23-7.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action at home this weekend against Marymount University on Saturday, September 9. Game will start at 2:00 pm.
