TIGERS SHUTOUT EMORY & HENRY, 4-0

Box Score

EMORY, VA – The Hampden-Sydney soccer team improved to 7-2-1 (3-1 ODAC) on the season with a 4-0 shutout of ODAC-rival Emory and Henry College. With the loss, the Wasps dropped to 6-5-1 (0-3 ODAC).

The Tigers dominated play against the Wasps as they were able to score early and often. In the 17th minute, freshman defender Michael Carter (Fredericksburg, VA/Massaponax) found sophomore forward Jason Powell (Marietta, GA/Pope) who ripped a shot in to the back of the net to give the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage. Only four minutes later, Powell found freshman forward David Burley (Mount Pleasant, SC/Wando) to increase the Tiger lead to two goals. In the second half, the Tigers continued to pressure the Wasps as senior captain Greg Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) scored off a pass from Powell. Junior midfielder Greg Danahy (Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley) finished off the scoring for the Tigers as he scored off of an assist from sophomore Craig Miller (Richmond, VA/Collegiate School).

The Tigers defense recorded its second shut out in as many games. Sophomore goalkeeper Ben Marchetti (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) made six saves. The shutout was Marchetti's fourth of the season and tenth of his career.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action at home against ODAC-foe Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday, October 4. The game is set to start at 4:00 pm.
