Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – The Lynchburg Hornets (2-0-0) won their second consecutive game to claim first place in the 2006 Arby's/ H-SC Soccer Classic as they defeated Averett University (0-2) by a score of 2-0. In the afternoon game at Miller Field, the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney (1-0-1) tied Alvernia College (0-1-1), 0-0.
The Hornets found the net at 52:23 into the game as Ishmael Sunday was able to control a errant pass in the Averett defense and beat the goalkeeper. The game remained 1-0, until midfielder Keith Brown found the back of the net with only three minutes left in the game. Averett goalkeeper, Ben Phelps, had a tremendous performance as he recorded 17 saves.
In the second game of the tournament, Hampden-Sydney and Alvernia battled for 110 minutes, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. Both teams played a physical match, totaling in 52 total fouls. Hampden-Sydney senior captain Will Robbins (Ridgeland, MS/Jackson Prep) was solid for the Tigers in defense, and freshman JoJo Howard (Laneka, VA/New Kent) proved a spark off the bench.
Lynchburg College placed five members of their squad on the all-tournament team including tournament MVP Maurwyn Brown. The All tournament team is as follows:

Hampden-Sydney: Ben Marchetti (Richmond, VA/ Benedictine), Michael Carter (Fredericksburg, VA/ Massaponax), and Greg Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier)

Averett: Ben Phelps
Hampden-Sydney College returns to action Wednesday, September 6, at home against Ferrum College at 4:00pm.
