TIGERS WIN MATCH AGAINST ODAC-FOE GUILFORD, 2-1

Box Score

GREENSBORO, NC – The Hampden-Sydney soccer team won its first ODAC soccer match of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Guilford Quakers. The Tigers won another hard-fought battle and improve to 5-1-1 (1-0 ODAC). With the loss, Guildford falls to 2-3-1 (0-2 ODAC).

Midway through the first half, the Tigers scored the first goal of the game as Sophomore forward Jason Powell (Marietta, GA/Pope) ran up the sideline and crossed the ball to senior captain Greg Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier). Smith headed the Powell cross into the net to give the Tigers the early lead. Only eight minutes later, Guilford was able to tie the game at one as Emmanuel Ukattah was able to control a cross and score for the Quakers. The game remained tied until the 66th minute, when sophomore forward Ian Ciejek (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin) was fouled in the box, resulting in a Hampden-Sydney penalty kick. Senior captain Will Robbins (Ridgeland, MS/Jackson Prep) capitalized on the opportunity as he netted the penalty kick and gave the Tigers a 2-1 advantage which would prove to be enough.

Hampden-Sydney may have played their best soccer to date, as head coach Josh Laux states, "I am very pleased with that win. That was a very good Guilford team. They were organized and tough. We showed a lot of resiliency coming back after they had tied the game at one. [Will] Robbins and [Jason] Powell had the best games of their careers."

Hampden-Sydney returns to action at home and in front of a family weekend crowd against ODAC-foe Washington & Lee University on Saturday, September 23. The game is set to start at 11:00 am.
