HAMPDEN-SYDNEY AND LYNCHBURG ADVANCE IN ARBY'S/H-SC SOCCER CLASSIC

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden-Sydney College defeated Averett University 5-0 and Lynchburg College defeated Alvernia College 6-1 in the opening round of play in the 2006 Arby's/H-SC Soccer Classic.

In the first contest between Hampden-Sydney and Averett University, aggressive play dictated the tone of the game, as Hampden-Sydney out shot the Cougars 20 - 4. Sophomore Ben Marchetti (Richmond, VA/ Benedictine H.S.) was credited with his first win of the season and sophomore Jason Powell (Marietta, GA/Pope) scored the game winning goal. Freshman forward David Burley (Mount Pleasant, SC/Wando) came off the bench for the Tigers and scored two goals.

In the second game, Lynchburg took the early lead as Alvernia scored an own goal only ten minutes into the game. The first half was tightly contested as Alvernia was able to fire six shots in the first half. Lynchburg caught fire in the second half as they scored five goals. Zach Naylon scored the lone goal for Alvernia.

Sunday's contests will bring more exciting college soccer action. At 12:00 pm Lynchburg (1-0) will take on Averett University (0-1) and Hampden-Sydney (1-0) will test its skills against Alvernia (0-1) at 2:30 pm.
