TIGERS AND ROYALS PLAY TO RAIN-DRENCHED TIE, 1-1

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (October 6, 2006)—Hampden-Sydney College (8-2-2/4-1-1 ODAC) and Eastern Mennonite University (5-5-3/1-2-2 ODAC) played to a double-overtime tie, 1-1, Friday afternoon at a rain-drenched Hellmuth-Pritzlaff Field in Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer action. The game was the first-ever soccer contest played at H-SC's new Field Turf facility.

The game featured a near one hour delay because of lightening as the contest was halted at the 14:52 mark of the first half. After play resumed, the Royals took just 50 seconds before taking a 1-0 advantage thanks to a goal from sophomore midfielder Regulo Cardoso, off an assist from Jared Byler.

The Royals made their lead stand up until the 75th minute of action when freshman midfielder JoJo Howard (Lanexa, Va./New Kent) sent a cross in front of the EMU net to a streaking David Burley (Mt. Pleasant, SC/Wando) who deposited it past the goalkeeper to tie the contest at one.

The two teams battled through regulation and the two ten minute overtime periods, and braved the monsoon-like rain conditions, but neither team was able to break the tie.

Both Jackson Maust (EMU) and Ben Marchetti (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) recorded five saves in the net for their respective teams as EMU held the advantage in shots, 15-10, and corners, 10-8.

Hampden-Sydney's soccer team returns to the pitch Wednesday, October 11, when the team travels to Lynchburg, Va., to take on ODAC-foe Lynchburg College at 4 pm.
