TIGERS SCORE UPSET VICTORY OVER VIRGINIA WESLEYAN, 2-1

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – The Hampden-Sydney soccer team came back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to beat regionally ranked Virginia Wesleyan College by a score of 2-1. With the win, the Tigers improve to 8-2-1 (4-1 ODAC) on the season. The Marlins dropped to 9-2-1 (3-1-1 ODAC).

Both teams played aggressively in the first half of play, and seemed to be matching one another until the 42nd minute, when Virginia Wesleyan's Kevin Sealy found Clay Price to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead. Hampden-Sydney increased their pressure in the second half, and in the 62nd minute, freshman midfielder JoJo Howard (Lanexa, VA/New Kent) passed a ball to forward Jason Powell (Marietta, GA/Pope) who was able to beat the Marlins' goalkeeper and tie the game at 1-1. The scored remained tied through regulation, and only seconds in to overtime, the Tigers were fouled near midfield. Senior captain Will Robbins (Ridgeland, MS/Jackson Prep) sent in a ball that was headed by freshman forward David Burley (Mount Pleasant, SC/Wando). The pass from Burley found senior captain Greg Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) who was able to find Greg Danahy (Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley) who was able to beat the goalkeeper and score the game winning goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ben Marchetti (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) allowed only one goal and made seven saves. Also worth mentioning, senior forward Robbie O'Cain (Asheville, NC/Asheville) and freshman defender Robert Beasley (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) provided a spark for the Tigers off the bench. Head Coach Josh Laux commented, "Robbie came off the bench and gave us good minutes. He was dangerous in front of their goal and held the ball well. He provided the senior leadership we needed to win the game."

Hampden-Sydney returns to action at home against Eastern Mennonite University for Homecoming on Friday, October 6. The game is set to start at 4:00 pm.
