Box Score (October 24, 2006) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – The Hampden-Sydney soccer team scored a 3-1 victory over ODAC-foe Bridgewater College on Senior Day. With the win, the Tigers improve to 10-5-2 (5-3-1 ODAC) on the season. The Eagles dropped to 7-10-1 (3-6 ODAC).
Hampden-Sydney took an early 1-0 lead as Greg Danahy (Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley) crossed a ball in front of the Bridgewater goal and an Eagle defender kicked the ball into his own goal. For the rest of the first half, both teams played aggressively and seemed to be matching one another. Hampden-Sydney increased their pressure in the second half, and in the 61st minute, freshman midfielder JoJo Howard (Lanexa, VA/New Kent) passed a ball to midfielder Will Robertson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) who found senior captain Greg Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) who was able to beat the Eagles' goalkeeper and give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. Only two minutes later, Danahy found freshman forward David Burley (Mount Pleasant, SC/Wando) who scored the Tigers third goal of the game. Bridgewater's Chris Thomas scored in the 81st minute, but it was not enough as the Tigers went on to a 3-1 victory in their regular-season finale.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ben Marchetti (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) allowed only one goal and made four saves. Although it was Senior Day, freshman midfielder JoJo Howard showed that the young Tigers are just as talented. Head Coach Josh Laux commented, "JoJo's intensity was excellent. That was the best performance by a freshman we seen thus far."
Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Saturday, October 28 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. The site and time of the game is yet to be determined.
