LYNCHBURG DEFEATS TIGERS WITH STRONG SECOND HALF, 3-1

(October 11, 2006) AMHERST, VA -- After a competitive first half, Lynchburg College proved to be too much for the Tigers in the second half, winning by a score of 3-1. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney drops to 8-3-2 (4-2-1 ODAC) while Lynchburg improves to 7-4-2 (3-1-2 ODAC).

Hampden-Sydney took the lead late in the first half as sophomore forward Reed Westra (Chester, VA/L.C. Bird) found sophomore midfielder Jason Butler (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin) who beat the Hornet goalkeeper to make the score 1-0. The Tigers held the advantage until the 72nd minute, when Lynchburg's Modou Jobareth scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams battled, but in the 81st minute, Lynchburg took the lead on a Phil Francois unassisted goal. Lynchburg's final goal came off a corner kick as Phil Francois found Brian Cocchiola who headed the kick into the back of the net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ben Marchetti (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) was solid in the net for the Tigers as he made eight saves. Lynchburg held the advantage in corner kicks 8-3 and shots 18-9.

The Tigers return to action at home on Friday, October 13, 2006 against LaGrange College. The game is set to start at 2:30pm. Come out and cheer on the Tigers!
