REMAINING UNBEATEN, HAMPDEN-SYDNEY RALLIES TO BEAT FERRUM 2-1

FERRUM, VA – The 17-6 margin of shots in favor of the Hampden-Sydney Tigers was no indication as to the way they performed in the first half. The Ferrum Panthers (2-2) scored at 26:25 into the first half on a goal from senior Ryan Hambright (Roanoke, VA).

When the Tigers returned after halftime, their effort had improved dramatically. The Tigers stymied the Panther attack to just two shots in the second half, none of which were on goal. As for the Tiger's offense, they were led by freshman midfielder Michael Krewinghaus, (Yorktown, VA/Tabb H.S.) who scored his first two goals of the year. His first came at 54:03 when senior Robert Harem (Pelham, AL/Pelham H.S.) and junior captain Greg Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier H.S.) used two quick and accurate passes to find the freshman.

"Krew," as his teammates know him, scorched the net a second time with under 9:00 to go in the contest. The goal came as senior captain Grant Dickens (Raleigh, NC/ Leeesville Road) ripped a blast from 40 yards out only to have the ball hit the crossbar. Fortunately for the Tigers, "Krew" hustled into great position and let one of his own fly up and to the left corner past the Panther's goalkeeper.

Tigers Head Coach, Josh Laux, was impressed by the play of Ferrum, commenting that "Ferrum really took it to us in the first half. They have to be the most improved team in the region." Laux felt fortunate that the Tigers escaped the first half only giving up one goal. "We were definitely not our best in the first half today...Smitty (Greg Smith) helped change the momentum for us." Coach Laux attempted to rest Greg Smith, a captain and regular starter who was hampered by an injured hip flexor but was forced to play him in the second half to provide a much needed spark.

The Hampden-Sydney Tigers continue with their second of a four game road trip on Saturday September 10, 2005 against Marymount College at 4:00 pm in Arlington, VA.
