HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden-Sydney College tied Catholic University 0-0 after two overtimes and Randolph Macon nipped Lebanon Valley College 1-0  in the opening round of play in the 2005 Arby's/H-SC Soccer Classic. Randolph Macon, Hampden-Sydney and Catholic will have a chance to win the "Arby's/ H-SC Classic" tomorrow afternoon at Hampden-Sydney's Miller field.

In the first contest between Hampden-Sydney and Catholic University, aggressive play dictated the tone of the game.  There was a total of 37 fouls between the two teams, while Hampden-Sydney out shot the Cardinals 24 - 12.  Freshman Ben Marchetti (Richmond, VA/ Benedictine H.S.) was credited with his second consecutive shutout and senior Bobby Hillmann (Raleigh, NC Leesville Road H.S.) notched seven shots, four of which were on goal.

The only goal of the day came in the second half of the afternoon game when Randolph Macon's Nick Mills (Carriere, MS) redirected a header from Matt Cooper (Edgewood, MD) and Kevan Quinn (St. Catherines, Ontario, CAN) at the 52:07 mark of the game.  Both Cooper and Quinn were credited with an assist and substitute Mills garnered the game winning goal as R-MC downed Lebanon Valley 1-0

Hampden-Sydney coach, Josh Laux commented that the Tigers "played a terrific game and deserved a better outcome."  In regards to the lack of scoring, Laux added, "last years team may have faltered but this years team found a way to maintain their defensive discipline and composure."

Sunday's contest will determine the champion for the tournament.  At 11:00 am Randolph Macon (1-0) will take on Catholic University (1-0-1) and Hampden-Sydney (1-0-1) will test its skills against Lebanon Valley (0-1) at 1:30 pm.
