HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden Sydney's soccer team dominated in a game against Bluefield College on Thursday's home opener, winning by a score of 2-0. Although the game remained tied at the intermission, the Tigers of Hampden Sydney scored two quick goals to set the tone for the rest of the afternoon and moved to 1-0 on the young season, while Bluefield dropped to 1-1.
Senior captain Grant Dickens (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Rd) scorched the net with the games' first goal off of a crisp assist from senior Bobby Hillman (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road). Not more than three minutes later another booming goal was scored by sophomore Greg Danahy (Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley) via a well executed set up from senior Robert Harem (Pelham, AL/Pelham H.S.).
After the quick scores the momentum stayed with the Tigers as they controlled the ball for the majority of the second half. Hampden-Sydney finished the afternoon out shooting the Rams of Bluefield College by a margin of 22-6.
Worth noting was the exceptional play of senior Bobby Hillman, who moved to defender for the last 15 minutes of the game, thusly shutting down any offensive opportunities for Bluefield College. In addition, Head Coach Josh Laux, started two freshman and displayed the depth of the incoming freshman class by substituting six more.
Hampden-Sydney stays at home this weekend to host the Arby's Soccer Classic. Action begins on Saturday September 3, 2005 vs. Catholic University at 12:00 pm and again on Sunday at 1:30 pm vs. Lebanon Valley College.
