HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (October 22, 2005)-With the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) playoffs set to take place next weekend, the NSCAA's South Region number nine ranked Hampden-Sydney Tigers made a statement Saturday by knocking off the number eight ranked Roanoke Maroon soccer team by a score of 3-1. The Tigers improve their record to 10-6-1 overall and 5-3 in the ODAC while the Maroons fall to 7-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
Roanoke struck first as freshman forward Michael Rouhana gathered a loose ball in the box and right footed a shot that found the net just eighteen minutes into the game. Hampden-Sydney responded quickly as senior Robert Harem (Pelham, AL/Pelham) sent a corner kick in the direction of junior captain Greg Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) who headed the pass just under the crossbar to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was Smith's third of the year and Harem's assist put him atop the ODAC with seven.
Hampden-Sydney took the lead with just seventeen seconds remaining in the half as freshman Jason Powell (Marietta, GA/Pope) scored off a header pass from senior captain Grant Dickens (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road).
The game remained 2-1 in favor of Hampden-Sydney until the seventy-fourth minute of play when the duo of Dickens and Powell struck again. Charging toward the Roanoke goal, Dickens made a dead on accurate pass to Powell who ripped a chest high line drive shot past the Maroons goalkeeper Rose Austin. The goal was Powell's second of the year and gave the Tigers the lead for good at 3-1.
Also making a significant contribution in the victory for the Tigers on Senior Day was freshman defender Stafford Craymer (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) who played the entire game and did an "awesome job" according to Hampden-Sydney Head Coach Josh Laux.
The Tigers will play their last regular season game on the road against conference foe Bridgewater. The game is scheduled to start at 3:00pm on Tuesday October 25, 2005.
